Instructor-Led learning workshop.
This course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language, and is an introductory level course that establishes a variety of communication skills. This course includes the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) whereby students develop expressive and receptive language skills through the learning of basic vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural awareness. This course will create a visual-gestural environment where all students will participate extensively in interactive classroom activities. Students will develop practical skills and knowledge for successful interactions within the Deaf community.
Topics include: Culture of the D/deaf community, attention getting strategies, politically correct terminology, behavioral norms/values, and the use of space, non-manual signals, and classifiers.
